Oprah

I'm sure many of you have been sent the latest Oprah bashing YouTube video. I tried to post the following comment on the video but my comment was 139 characters over the limit so I just thought i would post it here.

I'm really bothered by all the Oprah bashing that is going on recently. It really just sickens me and is no good sign of who we are as "christians". You'll have to give me more convincing proof that she denies Jesus. I've never heard those words come out of her mouth. I'm not saying she hasn't said it I'm just saying I haven't heard it and haven't heard her critics give me enough proof that she did say that. What I heard her saying was that there are many ways people take to get to their realization that they DO need God and a Savior. I don't watch Oprah anymore, I don't have time AND more importantly, I don't know what she would say because I haven't personally asked her. And all I hear lately is gossip, critisim and people misquoting her or giving their own personal interpretation of what they think Oprah said when I didn't interpret it that way at all. Until I hear more convincing proof or I talk to her myself I'm going to stay out of the "bashing Oprah" bandwagon. And I would encourage other "christians" to do the same thing. Quite Frankly, she's done way more good then most of our churches have done in the USa and abroad! So quit gossiping and worrying about Oprah and Be The Church!! That will change the world!

*don't worry Matt didn't write this I did!

B/, after seeing the video and hearing the hype(if you have or paid any attention to it) I would like your thoughtful assessment of it when you get a chance. You usually think alittle differently than most common folk so I would appreicate your insight.

I don't know how thoughtful the assessment will be, but here's a shot. I don't follow Oprah because I don't personally enjoy that, however, I will agree that she has accomplished much for many many people.

I took some time to watch several other videos and honestly, I feel sorry for her. She missed out on some serious discipleship along the way and got caught up in herself and the popularity and power that she accumulated. She says the one thing that turned her to begin a spiritual search for truth was hearing that God was a jealous God, and that nothing about that could be right. She hasn't come to terms with the fact that God must be that way and He is still glorious in the middle of that.

But if I remember her story right (coming from poverty to wealth), its hard to blame her in one sense. When I listen to her, I feel like she believes that she has accomplished everything on her own. From the world's standards, she has. I do feel that she has missed a huge opportunity in pointing the glory back to God who has given her success and allowed all eyes to land on Oprah.

She may not be denying Jesus outright, but her words do not lead to Him. It sounded much like postmodern, religious relativism (on the other videos). She is very much about what ever your search leads you to, then go for it. A dangerous place. But would she really have the audiences she has if she said anything other than that which pleased the ears of the masses? Success would have fled long ago had she continually been pointing the grace of Christ and the glory of God.

But I'm with you on the bashing, or even following it too closely. We should always be prepared to give a reasonable defense for this hope that we have. But I don't think attacking Oprah is healthy or productive. It reinforces the stigma that is already paced on Believers and is not going to change her mind. Influence your own circle. God is going to be okay. Really...He can handle Himself and Oprah.

Well I sometimes watch Oprah if the content is interesting. I quit watching her when she decided that honoring your spirit and the hyp on the new age movement started. I thought that was wierd. Then she brings the Secret out saying that we can change our life by changing our thoughts and we basically don't need anything but ourselves. Moving more to Kaballah and the new age religions. Gos against everything God teaches in scripture. A similar book is now out that Dr. Henry Cloud wrote on the secret of life from a Christian perspective. Scripture says "what good is it that you gain the whole world yet loose your soul." She has had many opportunites to proclaim Jesus but chooses not to. In an interview she said she would not say Jesus is the only way to heaven because she didn't want to offend her Muslim viewers. What does that tell you? More often than not I won't watch her or any other show that goes against what I believe. She may be a do gooder but that on its own won't get her any closer to heaven than the person without Jesus.

Myra, this is a very interesting video. Thought you might want to watch it.

I find it very disturbing and this may be some of the reason so many people are worked up. To hear her say that Jesus can't be the only way to heaven. She seems shocked that people would believe this. It's as if she's trying to limit God's plan of salvation to what she can comprehend or what makes sence to her intelect. As far as bashing her... I'm not into that either. When we degrade others for their belief system we tend to become disrespectful and mean hearted in our defense of the Gospel. I believe we can and should take a stand against the incorrect teaching of the bible. But in love, not hate. The message is to clear on this issue of salvation. It may not make sence. But good people with loving hearts don't go to heaven. Sinners, saved by God's grace go to Heaven and as you and I know... Jesus is the only way.
God bless you, Steve

Your Oprah worship is quite disgusting. Thank goodness John the Baptist isn't around...no telling what he'd say to her.

Myra, thanks for visiting my site as well. To answer your question if I'm an advocate of what this guys on Jesus-is-Savior.com writes, I really can not answer. I have not read anything from him. I came across this video that I posted earlier, but it was a clip from one of her shows, I have not been to the official site I suppose. I'll take a look and let you know what I think and then answer your question that you posted on my site. Talk to you later. Steve

Myra, I read just a couple of his writings and I'll give you my opinion. Sounds like he's done a lot of research, he spends an aweful lot of time trying to convince people of what he's saying. It gets old. One article I read was about his feelings about people who read the NIV version of the bible. It's not my favorite version, I prefer the New King James version, and I occasionally refer to the New Living Translation (I'm sure he'd really flip out over that one). I do have an NIV translation as well. His focus is so intent on showing me that this translation is Satan's way of invading my mind and destroying God's word. Never mind that when I was 13 years of age, I tried reading the little king James new testamnet that I got from school and didn't understand a word of it. I felt like I reading something from another era, a language I didn't understand. Then my sunday school teacher gave me a "Good News" bible. Now I finally understood. The word begotten might not have been in that version of the bible. But as I read it, I was convicted and realized that I was a sinner in desperate need of a Savior. I learned that this Savior was Jesus Christ and that he died for me then rose again victorious over death. I read that if I would simply believe and call on Jesus to save me, I would be Saved. Reading by flashlight in my bedroom late at night under the covers. I was broken to tears as I gave my life in surrender to Jesus as my Lord and Savior. I knew that now I had eternal life! I understand how he feels about the King James version of the bible and that he feels it's the only true version in english. But I praise God for another version that I could read and understand. I belong to Jesus because of it.
I've now read two articles on his web page. I think I've read enough. See ya.

I agree that there shouldn't be Oprah bashing by us Christians. What kind of example are we setting? I feel sorry that she has lost her way and know that the only productive thing I can do for her is pray for her.

Perhaps instead of spreading gossip and malicious content, we could send out a prayer request for her.

I have never watched her show...but I think it's unfortunate people are so vulnerable in their faith that they are getting lost in all of this new age religion.

Definitely need prayer.

Blessings,
Danielle

Hey Myra,
Well, you just always go right to the point, don't you?
In my experience, I've found that sometimes, the most helpful thing is to go directly to the source. Like when I was researching Halloween, I didn't read what Christians have to say about it, because frankly, I heard a lot of hype. So I went to the pagan/ wiccan websites, and read what THEY think about Halloween. You know what? That convinced me of the dangers of Halloween more than any scary story they told me in youth group!!
So I just paid a visit to Oprah.com. And it only took me about a minute to come across some very disturbing things. Just read the excerpt from Eckard Tolle's book here: http://www.oprah.com/obc_classic/webcast/archive/excerpt_stillness.jsp
This is a declaration that you and I are gods. And this, of course, is in direct violation of God's first and second commandments. There ARE no other gods! There is only ONE true God. Well, this type of stuff (self-empowerment, self-worship, self-esteem) is all over her website.
Yes, Oprah has done much good with her money... but how many weak Christians has she led astray with a small morsel of truth and a large portion of lies?
Now, the fact that the church should have been doing the work instead of Oprah, that's the church's problem, isn't it? And we will have to answer for that.
I also take issue with Oprah in her endorsement of Obama in that he feels that abortion up to the ninth month is perfectly fine. That scares me -- a lot.
So there's my two cents!
I don't have a google name or anything. This blogging stuff is so complicated!

I am not Oprah-bashing but am stating a personal opinion here. I sometimes catch an Oprah show and often find them interesting or informative. But for all the good she does, she comes off to me as still being very self-absorbed (Notice her constantly watching herself on the monitors and pointing out her celebrity "friends" or connections. I do applaud many of her efforts on others' behalves but realize that, with her huge income, she has to have large tax write-offs, which many of these programs provide.

Her use of nicknames for God has always bothered me. I find myself asking, "Why can't you just say God?" This may well be to avoid offending any of her viewers as, over the years I have also noticed her changing terminology in regard to "black", "people of color" and "African-American" to describe the people of her own race.

Jesus himself said, "I am the way..."
